Gruen Precision, Sunburst Guilloche Dial, c.1960s (Cal. N510SS)

Before Omega owned the moon and Rolex conquered the ocean, there was a watchmaker in Cincinnati who believed that everything should be built beautifully. Dietrich Grün arrived in America with Swiss guild training and German precision, founding what would become the largest watch company in the United States by the mid-1920s. This Gruen Precision represents that philosophy in its most refined form — a dress watch from the early 1960s powered by their signature 510 calibre, with Swiss movements cased and timed at Time Hill, their guild hall headquarters overlooking the Ohio River.

The dial commands attention. That radial sunburst guilloche catches light from every angle, creating depth that flat dials simply cannot match — thousands of fine concentric lines playing with ambient light each time you tilt your wrist. Applied gold stick indices float above the texture, while delicate alpha hands maintain perfect mid-century proportions. The 17-jewel hand-wound N510SS movement beneath is the workhorse that powered Gruen's dress watch range from 1950 onwards, beloved by watchmakers today for its straightforward serviceability.

At 34mm with a 10K gold-filled case and stainless steel back, this sits in the sweet spot of vintage proportions — substantial enough for modern wear, refined enough to slip under a cuff without ceremony. The caseback inscription "Cased and Timed in USA" speaks to Gruen's unique hybrid identity: Swiss precision assembled by American craftsmen in a factory built like a medieval guild hall to inspire them.

What elevates this reference is its cinematic connection. Bond watch researcher Dell Deaton identified a Gruen Precision 510 as the first timepiece ever worn on screen by James Bond — glimpsed on Sean Connery's wrist during the casino scene in Dr. No where cinema's most famous introduction was first uttered. Thought to be Connery's personal watch, it appeared across multiple early 007 films before the Rolex Submariner became the official choice. This dial variant differs from the Bond configuration, but shares the same movement family and heritage.

The Gruen Watch Company didn't survive the quartz revolution. By 1958, the family had sold out, and Time Hill fell silent. The Precision Factory in Biel/Bienne found a fitting second life — acquired by Aegler in 1977, it's now part of Rolex's manufacturing operations. For collectors, this creates something increasingly rare: genuine provenance and Hollywood folklore at a fraction of what comparable Swiss marques command.

Wind it daily, and it rewards you with the quiet mechanical rhythm of mid-century craftsmanship — a Cincinnati guild hall and a Swiss factory floor, working in concert across sixty years of keeping time.
